Language Policy
Background:
The practice of surveying in Ontario requires a high level of competence in listening, reading, speaking, and writing in English. As part of the day-to-day activities of being a land surveyor, members will be required to communicate effectively with coworkers and clients and be able to understand English within complex legal documents. The AOLS recommends Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 8 as a minimum requirement for success.
Policy:
During the initial intake interview, candidates whose first language is not English may be advised to take a language test to determine their level of competency. Depending on the results candidates may need to partake in further language studies and upgrading. Self-testing is available here. If a candidate's Learning Plan includes courses offered at a post-secondary institution, the candidate will be required to meet the language requirements of the institution at which they are seeking enrollment.
Candidates should contact the proposed learning institution to determine its language requirement and the proof required. In most cases, university level programs and courses require an overall Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 8 or equivalent. The AOLS is prepared to assist candidates in identifying the language requirements, referring them to appropriate language resources and service providers as well as providing other helpful information regarding language training and the workplace environment of an Ontario Land Surveyor. Evaluation results letters will contain a statement recommending that the candidate attain CLB Level 8 before entering into articles or attempting any Survey Law course.
